Every year, millions of women undergo treatments for breast cancer, a deadly disease that has claimed far more lives than necessary. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is dedicated to making people aware of the dangers of breast cancer and what can be done to keep from succumbing to it. Two points that the National Cancer Society emphasizes is the need for monthly breast self-exams, which involves a woman checking herself for lumps in her breasts, and yearly mammograms, which are screenings at the office of a medical professional with equipment designed to detect tumors. In addition to becoming more well-informed, women can honor this month by donating money to research to help beat this insidious disease.
