It might seem logical to apply a generous amount of your favorite outdoor suntan lotion before coming in for your Tropical Tan session, but this is actually counterproductive. Conventional tanning lotions are formulated to amplify the tanning properties of sunlight. They are not as effective when used in tanning beds. They can even damage tanning beds if you aren’t careful.

You might be wondering what to expect when you first visit the salon. Here at Tropical Tan, we want to ensure that our customers have the very best experience possible. When you visit us at Tropical Tan in Joplin, you can expect a friendly, comfortable environment. From the time you walk in the door to the time you leave, our staff will gladly assist you with any questions or needs. Here are some questions you might be wondering about:

What do I need to wear to tan?

When you enter your private tanning room, undress to your comfort level. We clean our tanning beds between each use, so feel free to make yourself comfortable.

Do I need  tanning lotion?

Yes, indoor tanning lotion will help increase your tan by 30–40 percent. It’s also very important to use a daily moisturizer; and you need to drink plenty of water to help your tan last longer. Consult one of our smart tan trained employees for the type of lotion you should use. Tropical Tan has a large selection of lotions, moisturizers and skin care products available for purchase. Plus, as a yearly member, you receive a 20 percent discount on select products.*

Do I need to use eye-wear?

It’s very important to wear eye protection. Your eyelids are thin layers of skin that don’t prevent UV exposure from your eyes. To protect your vision, we will ask to see your eye-wear. If you don’t have any eye-wear, we have some available for purchase. Thank you in advance for having your eye-wear out for staff to see.

How long should my first session be?

Your first session will depend on your skin type. Tropical Tan adheres to the Smart Tan Certified Skin Analysis to determine the time. To prevent sunburn, your first session may be short. As your base tan improves, session length can increase.

How often should I go?

In order to build your base tan, we suggest that you tan every two-to-three days. Start out slow, you want to build your tan, never burn. As long as you’re not pink, you can do a two-minute jump-in time.
