The Importance of a Good Base Tan

Hello again from Tropical Tan! As you get ready to celebrate the 4th of July and the rest of your summer, we hope you’ll consider visiting us and building up your base tan. You are less likely to get a really bad sunburn if your skin already has a little bit of color in it. A base tan acts as a built-in sunblock for as long as you maintain the color, and your skin has an easier time converting sunlight into a tan when it is already accustomed to doing so.

If you haven’t had any prolonged sun exposure since last summer, now is the perfect time to visit us and start off your tan. We’ll set the tanning bed to a very low intensity, and you’ll only be treated for a few minutes. This is sufficient to jump-start the tanning process at a level that your skin will react well to. As your tan develops, we can gradually increase the settings and prolong the length of your sessions. Once your base tan emerges, long days at the beach will be a breeze. You will have a smaller chance of burning when your skin is already in the habit of getting tanner in response to sunlight. It is especially important to have a base tan if you are going away on vacation this summer. The sun’s rays are much more direct at lower latitudes; it takes far less exposure than you would expect to develop a bad burn. Protect your skin by making sure a good amount of color is already there.

This means that every staffer has been trained to program your tanning bed with settings that are calibrated with your current skin tone and desired color in mind. We know that you love coming to us for tanning sessions because of how relaxing and pampering they are. We do all of the hard work for you! However, there are a few things you should keep in mind if you want to really optimize your tanning experience.

It might seem logical to apply a generous amount of your favorite outdoor suntan lotion before coming in for your Tropical Tan session, but this is actually counterproductive. Conventional tanning lotions are formulated to amplify the tanning properties of sunlight. They are not as effective when used in tanning beds. They can even damage tanning beds if you aren’t careful.

Before hopping into your tanning bed, speak with one of our employees about our stock of high-end indoor tanning creams and lotions. Our staff is well-educated when it comes to skincare, and we can recommend the right product for your skin type and tanning goals. We can also suggest products for prolonging your new color and keeping your skin moisturized an conditioned after tanning. Medications Matter

Transparency and communication are incredibly important when changing anything about your body. Tanning is not a medical procedure, but you still need to inform us if you are on any new medications or have experienced any notable physical changes. We realize this is a sensitive issue, but we only encourage disclosure because we care so much about our loyal Tropical Tan clients!

Some medications can cause your skin to become more sensitive to sunlight. This is called photosensitivity. This doesn’t just apply to topical creams or ointments. Lots of oral medications can affect the way your skin reacts to light. The most obvious culprits are acne and anti-aging treatments. Anything containing retinol draws away the top protective layers of your skin, eliminating one component of your barrier against sunburn. Oral medications like Accutane do same thing to a more extreme degree. Even relatively benign treatments like antibiotics may necessitate a shift in your regular tanning routine.

When your doctor prescribes you a new medication, make sure you ask him or her if it will change your skin’s photosensitivity levels. Let us know this information before your next tanning session so we can adjust your Smart Tan bed accordingly. As an alternative, we may recommend one of our sunless spray tans until you have finished up your round of medication.

Lots of normal skincare products can affect your skin’s reaction to Tropical Tan’s Smart Tan beds. AHA and BHA creams make your skin more sensitive. Ointments that dry out blemishes can make your skin feel irritated after tanning. If you are a new Tropical Tan client, please inform us of your complete skincare routine and any medications you might be on. These are important factors in designing the right tanning program for you.

Seeing Spots

Few things are more satisfying than seeing your skin gradually take on the natural beachy glow you’ve been waiting for. Uneven patches and white spots put a major damper on this excitement. Often, these spots are not a result of human error, but rather the natural inclinations of your own body. Tropical Tan’s Smart Tan techs can take steps to avoid uneven tanning if you already know that you are predisposed to developing these pale patches.

Tinea Versicolor is an easy problem to solve. It is caused by a fungus that interrupts your skin’s ability to develop a tan. Since the fungus takes hold in the scalp before spreading to the rest of the body, it can be remedied with regular use of a strong dandruff shampoo.

Vitiligo is a condition characterized by the skin’s inability to retain melanin in specific areas. The skin around those patches will tan normally, but the pale patches simply don’t latch onto any color. This cannot be treated with tanning alone; it is a medical problem that requires treatment from a doctor.

Sometimes uneven tanning is caused by your position on the tanning bed. If your weight is supported on isolated pressure points like your shoulder blades, tailbone and the backs of your legs, your blood flow in those areas may be affected. This makes the skin over those points less likely to darken under UV lights. This is fixed by simply working out new ways of positioning your body. We can also program your bed so you are turning over more frequently, keeping the blood moving uniformly in your whole body.
